Citizen science in Africa – making it work for conservation

Across Africa, citizen science is producing a growing body of data and inspiring significant numbers of people to connect with local and national conservation issues. This exciting development has led to an urgent need for training to enable African scientists to analyse and interpret these data in order to generate useful outputs to inform practice and policy.

In response, the TBA is leading an innovative new collaboration of UK and African partners to build the capacity of citizen science leaders in Africa. The Citizen Science in Africa (CISCA) Programme aims to translate citizen science biodiversity monitoring into more effective decision-making for conservation by:

giving African conservation scientists the skills and tools to analyse citizen science datasets – across a wide range of taxa – and to use these results for advocacy

providing follow-up support to ensure that new skills are applied successfully after training

training citizen science leaders to engage civil society in citizen science projects and maximise the validity of the data they collect

Who is this course for?

The workshops are designed for African conservation scientists and citizen science project leaders – preferably with a masters degree – who are actively collecting citizen science data and need to know how to analyse it, interpret and present it. Applicants are invited from non-governmental organisations, universities, research and conservation institutions and government research departments.
