TBA Alumni groups Benin |
This e-bulletin is designed to supplement the TBA Funding database by posting the most recent opportunities and announcements as they come in. In particular, it focuses on current job vacancies and funding sources for conservation biologists. The bulletin also posts information on the progress of TBA national groups. The groups are organised by the alumni to promote interaction between their members and the entire TBA network. They provide a forum for the alumni to share ideas and experiences after the courses. Alumni who wish to update their details with the TBA can fill in the alumni updates form and send it to alumni@tropical-biology.org.

The Benin TBA alumni group (BTAG) held its first reunion on 15th October 2007, at the Institute of Applied Biological Sciences (ISBA) at Cotonou, Benin. The alumni shared experiences of the unforgettable times spent during the different TBA courses they attended, how they benefited from the course and their career progress. The group came up with a plan of its activities which included; contributing to sustainable natural resources management through research activities, participation to scientific seminars and conferences, participation to national and international days through actions towards sustainable use of natural resources and environment protection, publicize TBA courses in Benin and creation of a mailing list of jobs and other opportunities. The 1st list of opportunities has been shared with the TBA as a contribution to the online funding database and the bulletin board. Minutes of the meeting are available here
Country Co-ordinator: Godwin Ade Tanda (TBA 04/4, Kirindy) godytanda@yahoo.fr or CATBAA@yahoogroups.com
It really took a long time to observe that the TBA alumni from Cameroon were not very fortunate for most of the follow-up programmes including scholarships. This was probably caused by their inability to meet as a constituent group. The alumni meeting held in Accra Ghana in 2004 highlighted the different follow-up support opportunities and targets. This meeting became the key starter in the conception of CATBAA. Currently, most of its members are working or studying out of the country, the group strives to be an umbrella of many conservation efforts from many parts of the country where each of its members is represented. Legalising the association in the country has been a challenge but modalities are being proposed for start up contributions towards legalisation of CATBAA.Webpages: http://groups.yahoo.com/group/CATBAA. Country Co-ordinator: John Abraham (TBA 04/2, Kibale) jonnieabraham@yahoo.co.uk .
With a progressive increase in the membership of the Ghanaian alumni group year after year, there has also been a progressive number of members moving out of Ghana in pursuit of graduate studies. The TBA courses have therefore been a good stepping stone for many of the members.

The
current membership of the Ghanaian alumni group is 42. Of these, about
75% are active members.
It is interesting to note that as many as about 61% of the active members are living outside of Ghana, either studying or working in academia. About 34% of them are in Europe and about 27% in North America.
With the situation at the hands of the Ghanaian alumni group, the group is thinking of online meetings to advance its course of contributing to natural resources conservation with the knowledge, expertise and experiences acquired so far from our TBA courses and other Institutions of higher learning.
Activities
February 29th 2009: Noguchi, University of Ghana

February 9th 2007: First meeting of The TBA Alumni Association of Kenya (TBAAK) held at the National Museums of Kenya.
TBAAK has members
from a variety of environmental and research
organizations and academic institutions. Their main goal is to create
a network for effective, biodiversity, research, conservation, and management,
through activities such as; collective participation in environmental
education and awareness and research in biodiversity.
Several consultations among the members in late 2007 yielded a constitution that is being used in the registration of TBAAK as an independent organisation. Several members have proposed various ideas to promote teamwork in scientific research. This has been noted as a key issue with the rich diversity in knowledge, expertise and experience that the group has. The association plans to hold a seminar at the National Museums of Kenya to discuss the way forward as far as contributing to natural resources conservation is concerned.
July 11th 2009: All the requirements of the TBAAK registration process have been fulfilled. The group eagerly waiting for an interview after which a certificate of registration would be issued to them . Soon after, an official launch is anticipated.
