Nigeria TBA Alumni (NTBA)
OLALERU Fatsuma (PhD)
NTBA’s vision is to have a vibrant community of Nigerian conservation scientists and professionals that speak with one voice and contribute to sustainable management of Nigeria’s biological diversity. The group holds regular capacity building sessions and meetings for self-development and have run several projects one of which has been published – “Tropical Montane Forest Biodiversity in Nigeria – Case Study of Ngel Nyaki Forest Reserve, Mambilla Plateau” in the International Journal of Environmental Sciences.
A new Executive Committee has been elected for 2021
President: OLALERU Fatsuma (PhD); Department of Zoology, University of Lagos
Vice President: EKWEMUKA, Chukwudi Michael; Department of Animal Biology, Federal University of Technology, Minna, Niger State
Secretary: LABIRAN, Adeola Juliana; Hayat Kimya Nigeria
Project Officer: ADEDOJA, Opeyemi Adebayo (PhD); Department of Conservation and Marine Science, Cape Peninsula University of Technology, South Africa (post-doc).
Financial Secretary: KOLAWOLE-DANIELS, Aghogho; Department of Fisheries Resources, Nigerian Institute for Oceanography and Marine Research, Lagos.
The outgoing President, Emmauel Akindele, wrote “I wish to also seize this moment to remind us of some of the objectives of an association like ours: (i) give back to our community/nation, (ii) build capacity for aspiring (conservation) biologists, and (iii) build an active social/research network among members. The extent to which we will achieve these objectives depends on our future cooperation and responses. Among other challenges, we can all attest to the fact that our governments have not shown enough commitment towards conservation, unlike some other sub-Saharan nations, especially on the east of our continent. We can help bridge the gap in our conservation efforts if we speak collectively since a tree does not make a forest.”
He thanks the members for their support and words of encouragement, and asks them to support the new, promising executive team.
